The Centre for Research on Exercise, Physical Activity and Health (CRExPAH) leads research in exercise, physical activity, health and wellbeing.
The aim of our research is to build capacity for primary, secondary and tertiary prevention that will underpin improvements in health to create a physically active and healthy Australia. Research addresses issues relating to exercise, physical activity, health and wellbeing across the lifespan, in clinical and non-clinical populations, and in settings such as health services, workplaces, schools, universities, aged care and communities.
Our Vision
Our vision is a physically active and healthy Australia.
Our expertise
- Exercise training and physical activity for non-communicable conditions: Chronic kidney disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal conditions, cancer, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, organ transplants, and mild cognitive impairment.
- Workplaces: patterns of activity and sedentary behaviour at work, organisational and work influences on employee health behaviour, workplace health promotion.
The scope of CRExPAH’s research is to address issues relating to exercise, physical activity and health across the lifespan.
Research projects are strategically targeted at different levels of interventions, from supporting individuals with chronic health conditions, working with employees and workplaces in a prevention framework, and to a broader level of policy research to enhance our current knowledge of physical activity and health.
Our research projects include:
The effects of exercise on health outcomes in women following treatment for gynaecological cancer (ACUMEN trial)
This project touches on how exercise has been effectively used in breast and other common cancers to reduce women’s risk of developing treatment-related chronic conditions.
Resources to guide exercise specialists managing adults with diabetes
A team of Exercise Physiologists, Dietitians and Endocrinologists have developed a series of resources to assist in the delivery of exercise to people with diabetes.
Higher Degree by Research (PhD or MPhil)
CRExPAH academic staff supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students working in a diverse range of disciplines including exercise, physical activity, health and wellbeing.
If you are interested in pursuing a Doctorate or Master’s degree please seek a relevant CRExPAH supervisor, or for general information contact hmns.pgrad@uq.edu.au.
Interested in applying for research funding with CRExPAH? We often have fully-funded scholarships available through various grant schemes. The UQ Graduate School manages a number of national and international scholarship schemes that provide financial support for tuition fees, living costs and travel which enables you to focus on your research.
More about Higher Degree by Research
Undergraduate Research
Winter Research Scholarships: The UQ Winter Research program is an opportunity for UQ undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students to become involved in exciting research within the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences for 4 to 6 weeks during the Winter vacation (June/July). Scholarships are available for selected students.
Summer Research Scholarships: The UQ Summer Research program is the opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students to get involved in exciting research project within the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences during the summer (November to February). Scholarships are available for selected students.
Honours Projects: Students completing an (Honours) program are required to undertake an individual research project in the area of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences to gain further experience in research. Students will acquire skills which will enable them to work without close supervision in a research environment in industry or government, or to proceed to a research higher degree.
The following link directs you to all current Honours projects in the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences (SHMNS). Some of these in the areas of Exercise Physiology and Physical Activity and Health will be supervised by CRExPAH Academic Staff.
