School Guidelines – Extensions
HMNS School assessment guidelines
Extensions are considered in line with the Assessment Procedure and in reference to the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences Guidelines.
Extensions are not a remedy for students experiencing more significant impacts to their ability to study. If you have a continuing condition or circumstance, you should contact a Student Adviser to discuss the support available to you. If you have been ill, or unable to attend class or do any study for more than 4 weeks, we advise you to carefully consider whether you are capable of successfully completing your courses this semester. You might be eligible to request a Removal of Course.
The School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences (HMNS) uses the following guidelines in the consideration of Extension of Assessment Due Date. The school has discretion in deciding whether to grant an extension or not. If you are uncertain of your eligibility, you should contact the school.
The HMNS Student Administration Team aims to process all extension requests within two business days. However, in peak periods it may take longer.
Note: Extensions will generally not be granted past the anticipated release of assessment results, or the period specified in the Course Instance, whichever comes first.
- If the basis of the application is a medical condition, applications should be accompanied by a medical certificate obtained on or before the assessment item due date.
- The illness should be within the period three weeks prior to the advertised due date of the assignment (medical certificates for extended retrospective periods of illness will not be accepted, except in exceptional circumstances).
- If the illness occurs within less than two days before the due date, evidence of satisfactory progress is required and may impact duration of extension (if approved).
- If the basis of the application is on circumstances not addressed in clause 59 of the Assessment Procedure, it must meet all elements of clause 66, and be evidenced with supporting documentation or information and:
- the circumstances should have occurred within the period three weeks prior to the advertised due date of the assignment.
- If the circumstances occur within less than two days before the due date, evidence of satisfactory progress is required and may impact duration of extension (if approved).
- The extension granted should be in proportion to the period of disruption caused by the circumstances, and typically be no more than two weeks in duration.
Note: Students who are not able to provide evidence of adequate progress on their assessment task may have their extension application refused.
- Applications made based on a Student Access Plan (SAP) or Extension Verification Letter (EVL) will only be considered for one extension of up to seven (7) days per assessment task. Unless a SAP or EVL clearly states a provision for multiple extensions to assessment due dates and/or provision for a duration longer than seven (7) days, subsequent requests for extension on the basis of a SAP or EVL will need to include additional supporting documentation. For example:
- medical certificate provided by a registered medical practitioner, registered nurse, or registered pharmacist,
- or a statement from a counsellor, psychologist, or psychiatrist.
- If the application is for an online quiz that is available to students for a period of more than 24 hours, and you are unable to complete the quiz during the period the quiz is available, you may apply for an extension of the online quiz. All supporting documentation or information for an extension to the online quiz should cover the entire period the quiz is open.
Note: If an online quiz is open for 24 hours or less, students need to submit a deferred exam request via mySI-net. Applications must be submitted no later than 5 calendars days after the date of the original quiz. Your supporting documentation must cover the date of the quiz.
- A request for an extension to an assessment due date must be submitted through my.UQ as soon as it becomes evident that an extension is needed, but no later than the assessment item submission due date and time as per Assessment Procedures.
- Any applications submitted after the assessment items due date and time, even if you have a SAP or EVL, must meet additional requirements and will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances.
- Students applying for an extension after the due date and time must include evidence of the reason for the late request. The student must sufficiently explain or document how the nature of their condition or circumstance made it impossible, or unsafe, for them to have submitted an application before the due date and time, as per Assessment Procedures.
Further information regarding the extension application process is available in Part D of the Assessment Procedures and at my.UQ.
