Professional experience is an integral part of the Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (Honours) [BHSPE (Hons)]. Students within this program undertake more than 100 days of supervised teaching experience in a range of settings including primary, secondary and contexts for children with additional needs. It is an opportunity for students to apply theoretical knowledge to practice and develop teaching skills in a real-life setting.
2nd Year BHSPE (Hons)
Motor Active
Duration: 10 x 2.5 hour sessions (4 days equivalent)
Course: EDUC2003 Teaching Sport and Games
Location: Connell Gym, School of Human Movement & Nutrition Sciences, UQ
Purpose: Introduction to working with children with additional needs Motor Active is a public physical activity clinic for primary aged children with additional needs
Introduction Primary Professional Experience
Duration: 5 days (full time in school)
Course: EDUC2004 Supportive Learning Environments
Location: Primary schools in Queensland
Purpose: Introduction to teaching; working with HPE specialist and general classroom teachers
This placement occurs in the final week of the mid-year university break.
UniPE Primary
Duration: 8 half days (4 days equivalent)
Course: EDUC2004 Supportive Learning Environments
Location: Primary schools in Brisbane
Purpose: Introduction to HPE teaching in a primary school context
3rd Year BHSPE (Hons)
Introduction Secondary Professional Experience
Duration: 10 days (full time in school)
Course: EDUC3006 Inquiry Based Pedagogies
Location: Secondary schools in Queensland
Purpose: Introduction to teaching in a secondary school context
This placement occurs in the final two weeks of the mid-year university break.
UniPE Secondary
Duration: 4 half days (2 days equivalent)
Course: EDUC3006 Inquiry Based Pedagogies
Location: Secondary schools in Brisbane
Purpose: Exploration of advanced teaching styles in a junior secondary school context
Minor Professional Experience
Duration: 15 days (full time in school)
Course: EDUC3006 Inquiry Based Pedagogies
Location: Secondary schools in Queensland
Purpose: HPE teaching in a secondary school context
4th Year BHSPE (Hons)
Major Professional Experience - Education
Duration: 60 days (full time in school)
Course: EDUC4005 Major Professional Experience (Education)
Location: Secondary schools in Queensland
Purpose: Work in secondary school HPE & Science Departments for 12 weeks
There are a range of pre-placement requirements set by the University of Queensland that Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education (Honours) students are required to meet prior to the commencement of placements.
