What makes a good sports coach?

28 January 2022

Associate Professor Steven Rynne from UQ’s School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences spoke with ABC’s The Conversation Hour about what makes a good sports coach.

“It can vary from place to place and time to time,” Associate Professor Rynne said.

“So, the kinds of coaches that we want when we are first engaging in sport is going to be very different from those stages where we are developing our craft and becoming maybe more serious about sport, and it’s going to be different to the kind of coach that we want at the elite level.

“For me what makes a good coach- a fundamental that runs through all forms of coaching- is care.

“Because coaches are responsible for those in their charge and a lot of time we are working with really young people, so care has to be the fundamental and our starting point.”
